Laparoscopic Placement of the Peritoneal Dialysis Catheter Using a Specially Designed Trocar: A Review of 84 Patients
Eighty-four patients with end-stage renal disease underwent laparoscopic placement of a peritoneal dialysis catheter over a 6-year period. The perioperative period and first 3 months postoperative are presented here. The catheters were placed using a specially designed trocar named after its designer, Z.Cala-Cala's trocar.Operating time ranged from 15-40 min. There were no comlications during the operations. In the early postoperative period (first 2 days), there were two instances of bleeding within the abdominal cavity (successfully treated by erythrocyte transfusion and cleansing of the abdominal cavity). Two patients had immediate postoprative bleeding at the outer position of the catheter with no obvious cause (solved with an extra suture). Fifteen patients had slightly hemorrhagic dialysate on the first peritoneal lavage. There were no catheter failures or other early complications (i.e. leaks, scrotal edema. wound infection). In conclusion, the laparoscopic placement of the peritoneal catheter using Cala's trocar is simple, quick, and efficient method appropiate for routine practice.
