Fine-needle aspiration cytology, salivary gland ultrasonography and sialography in the evaluation of Sjögren’s syndrome
Objectives were to evaluate the value of ultrasound (US)-guided fine-needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) for assessment of salivary gland involvement in patients with primary Sjogren's syndrome. US-guided FNAC was performed on 60 patients with with sicca symptoms and enlargement of the major salivary glands. Thirty-one patients had primary Sjogren's syndrome (pSS) according to the European Community Criteria. Our results conclusively indicate that US-guided FNAC is a valuable method for evaluating salivary gland involvement in pSS. Furthermore, US-guided FNAC may be useful for the follow-up and monitoring of pSS. Since, lymphomas are detected in patients with pSS with a relative high frequency, an early diagnosis could improve the treatment of the disease.
