Skeleton Changes Induced by Horse Riding on Eight Medieval Skeleton Remains – Kamenmost-Kaldrma (Croatia)//International Meeting on Forensic Medicine Alpe-Adria-Pannonia 2010.

Through collaboration with Archeological Museum of Croatian Anthropological Monuments in Split in Croatia, skeletal remains of 35 persons from Croatian location Kamenmost-Kaldrma from 14th century were excavated and were analyzed by standard anthropological methods [1, 2]. Characteristic changes in eight male skeletal remains on femora and bones of the pelvis were analyzed by two independent teams in Clinical institute for pathology, forensic medicine and cytology in Clinical hospital centre Split in Croatia, and results of both analysis were compared. All pelvis have characteristics of female gender and pronounced muscle attachments which are both indicative for horse riders [3]. All eight persons had at least two of six changes on femora indicative for horse riders [4]. Vertebras of seven persons (1 person didn’t have preserved vertebras) have Schmorle’s nodes. Signs of advanced osteoarthritis were found on all joints in all eight persons. All of them also have visible signs of periostitis especially on low extremities. Pathological signs of trauma were found in five persons. Two of them had skull fracture and the rest had fractures of extremities which are indicative for horse riders [3]. Average age of all eight persons is estimated at 45.6 years. Male gender for five persons was confirmed by DNA analysis and three of them have shown no DNA results due to DNA degradation and fragmentation. Relatively high percentage of horse riders (22.86%) in population of 35 persons indicates frequent horse riding in economy and military purpose, which is also confirmed with archeological findings on tombstones.
