Suicide attempt at the psychiatric emergency care unit
Objective: establishing one-year frequency of suicide attempts at the psychiatric emergency care unit at the Psychiatric Clinic, Clinical Hospital Split, Croatia (800000 inhabitants in the region). Method: evaluation of psychiatric clinical medical data. ResuIts: From 1999 to 2000 there were 3505 patients examined at psychiatric emergency care unit. Suicide attempts (N=121) were either hospitalized (63%) or proceeded to outpatients' psychiatric treatment (37%). Suicide attempted 52 females and 69 males. 31 women (59, 6%) and 46 men (66, 6%) were hospitalized. 33 patients (27%) maintained on longer hospitalization. Ratio between hospitalized versus non-hospitalized patients was 2:l. Total males suicide attempts overcame females by 14%. Conclusion: There is still a tendency of hospitalization of suicide attempts and a lack of more thorough follow up of these patients, induding specific mental health services.
