SYMBOLS AND RITUALS IN HEALING OF TRAUMATIC WOUNDS
Symbols and rituals are important part in the life course of every person, family, small and large groups, societies and cultures. It pertains to conscious as well as individual and collective unconscious. They help to overcome some psychological loss, a traumatic event, and they are unavoidable part of healing of individual and social aspects of the self. Regardless of fact that symbols and rituals are very often part of different group processes, they are insufficiently explored. In this lecture I will explore the role of symbols and rituals in different groups of psychologically traumatized people on personal as well as on wider social levels. The psychodynamic meanings of symbols and rituals and their importance in group analytic therapies will be emphasised through different theoretical concepts and practical case records. Author’s own experiences from the war veterans’ groups and importance of symbols and rituals in approaching and healing traumatic wounds will be especially taken into consideration and elaborated.
