Dosimetric performance of and environmental effects on Sterin irradiation indicator label
Two versions of Sterin Irradiation Indicator labels (125 and 300 Gy threshold dose, respectively) were evaluated for threshold dose indication, as well as for a possible dosimetric performance. The effects of dose, post-irradiation storage time, temperature, and relative humidity on the response (defined as difference of reflectance at 570 and 640 nm, respectively) were studied by diffuse reflectance spectroscopy. The responses reached the saturation at the threshold doses as declared. The sensitivity below the threshold was in most cases sufficient to detect +- 30% variation of dose. Temporal decay of the signal had ceased after 2 months' storage, both at normal 25 oC) and elevated (40 oC) temperature and at most RHs, except the extreme values. In conjunction with a suitable mobile reader, a crude dosimetry system for food irradiation inspection can be developed.
