The effects of size and shape of the irradiation vessel on the response of some chemical dosimetry systems to photon irradiation

The effects of size and shape on dose absorbed in several chemical dosimeter solutions: Fricke, ethanol-chlorobenzene (ECB), and chlorobenzene-ethanol-trimethylpentane (CET), irradiated in different vessels by a Gammacell irradiator, were investigated in an effort to assess the adequacy of an irradiator of that type for dosimeter calibration purposes. Energy absorption characteristics of dosimeters were calculated using a cavity theory for Co-60 gamma-rays, E=1.25 MeV and for the Gammacell spectrum, respectively. The calculations showed that the change of the incident irradiation energy from 1.25 MeV photons to the Gammacell spectrum had a negligible influence on the respective energy absorption characteristics of dosimetric solutions used. The wall effect was also negligible for irradiation vessels with inner diameter greater than 1 cm.
