The crystal structure and some thermodynamic properties of the TbNi_5_-_xAl_x - hydrogen system
A structural study of the TbNi_5_-_xAl_x alloys revealed that nickel can be replaced by aluminium up to the composition TbNi_2Al_3. All single phase alloys have been exposed to hydrogen gas at pressures up to 15 MPa and temperatures between 77 and 700 K. It was found that under the above conditions only ternary alloys having the CaCu_5 type of structure (up to the composition TbNi_3Al_2) react with hdrogen. It was also found that the hydrogen equilibrium pressure decrease with the increasing content of aluminium as does the hydrogen capacity. The entropy, the enthalpy and the Gibbs free energy of formation have been extracted from the equilibrium plateau in the pressure-composition isotherms.
