Equations of state, mixing rules and phase equilibrium calculations. Part 2. Mixing rules and vapor-liquid equilibrium calculation
This paper together with the previous one1 reviews the equations of state (EOS) that are widely used in thermodynamic applications to hydrocarbon processing problem. The most widely used cubic equations (van der Waals, Redlich-Kwong, Soave, Peng-Robinson) are emphasized in this presentation, in which important thermodynamic functions are derived from EOS. Here, the application of the EOS, extended to mixtures through the use of mixing rules for combining pure component properties, is presented. The main purpose of this paper is to present and discuss procedures to make vapor-liquid equilibrium (VLE) calculations from the EOS, and at the same time maintaining the standard or rigor, demanded by sound thermodynamic analysis.
