A study of copper passivity by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy
In situ electrochemical impedance spectroscopy has been used to study the characteristics of passive films potentiodinamically formed on copper, in slightly alkaline solution. A strong correlation between the absolute impedance and the changes in the composition and structure of the passive film was established and several parameters were examined, such as: the ionic resistivity, rho_ox of about 10^10 Ohm cm, the dielectric constant, epsilon_ox of about 105, and the vacancy concentration, c(V_O) of about 10^9 cm^-3. It has been shown that impedance spectroscopy is a very suitable technique for the study of in situ metal and alloy passivity, and does not always require the knowledge of complex transfer functions or equivalent circuits at the interface boundary metal / growing oxide film / electrolyte.
