Study of Structural Chages in Powders Induced by High-Energy Ball Milling
High energy ball mill processing (HEBMP) has become a very popular research topic, since virtually any composition can be manufactured using a powder mixture of pure elements (so called mechanical alloying) or available master alloy powders (mechanical milling - grinding). It has been established that many solid state reactions, which normally occur only at elevated temperatures, can be facilitated by HEBMP. Presumably during milling the production of a large number of structural defects (storing the energy in the material) raised high enough to be able to drive the structural transformation. In this contribution the results of our study of the structural and morphological changes in some powder mixtures of the ZrO2-Y2O3-MgO system, collected by applying X-ray diffraction (XRD), high resolution transmition electron microscopy (HRTEM) and specific surface area (SSA) (BET) measurements, were described and discussed.
