Synthesis and characterization of new molybdenum(VI) oxalate complexes. Crystal structure of tetramethylammonium salt of ľ-oxo-diaquadioxalatotetraoxodimolybdenum(VI)
In the reaction of molybdenum(VI) oxide with oxalic acid and RCl (R = pyH and -picH) new dinuclear complexes of molybdenum(VI) R2Mo2O5(C2O4)2(H2O)2 have been prepared. When molybdenum(VI) oxide was treated with aqueous solution of tetramethylammonium oxalate complex (CH3)4N2MoO3(C2O4)H2O was isolated. The unknown crystal structure of (CH3)4N2Mo2O5(C2O4)2(H2O)2 was determined from single crystal diffractometer data and refined to the final R value of 0.030. Being irradiated this class of compounds shows considerable photochromic properties. The photochemical process is of the redox type: the molybdenum(VI) centers are reduced to molybdenum(V) moieties. The presence of molybdenum(V) species was confirmed by the ESR spectra.
