A comparison of anthropogenic mercury pollution in Kaštela Bay (Croatia) with pristine estuaries in Öre (Sweden) and Krka (Croatia)

Marine sediments in Kaštela Bay, Adriatic sea, Croatia (Fig. 1) have been heavily contaminated by industrial and urban waste waters containing elemental mercury, derived from a PVC chloralkali plant which operated during the period 1950-1990 (Bilinski et al., 1976, 1980, 2001; Bilinski and Trinajstić, 1979; Bilinski and Zelić, 1980; Bilinski and Jusufi, 1980; Stegnar et al., 1980; Mikac et al., 1985; Zvonarić et al., 1987; Martinčić et al., 1989; Zvonarić, 1991, 2001; Odžak et al., 1996; Kwokal et al., 1998; Kwokal and Branica, 2000; Horvat et al., 2001; Niessen et al., 2001). Kaštela Bay, situated in the middle of the eastern Adriatic coast in the vicinity of the town of Split, is a semi enclosed, oval-shape basin, with the Jadro River providing the main fresh water input. This paper describes mercury contamination in sediments and waters in Kaštela Bay 10 years following the closure of the chlor-alkali plant, with the concern that the local ecosystem, having been heavily impacted, still retains the possibility of contaminating the local population. Mercury concentrations determined in sediments of Kaštela Bay are compared with values obtained when the factory was still operating, as well as those in the more pristine areas of the Krka River and Öre Estuaries.
