Effect of plant oil enriched diets on the mineral concentration in mice during liver regeneration
Introduction: We have examined influence of olive oil and corn oil on zinc, calcium, magnesium and iron concentration in regenerating liver. Materials and methods: Male Balb/C mice were fed diets enriched with corn oil (FCO) or olive oil (FOO), with control group on standard diet (FSD). Animals were partially hepatectomised under aether anaesthesia ; 1, 2 and 7 days latter they were sacrificed. Tissues were removed, washed in saline solution, dried and exposed to the microwave digestion. Minerals were determined by ion coupled plasma spectrometry. Results: First two days after PH zinc was increased in all three groups compared to controls, respectively. Zinc was also increased 7th day in FSD mice compared to FCO. Restoration of the original zinc concentration values 7th day after operation in both FCO and FOO mice was observed. Calcium concentration was increased 1st day in FSD and FOO mice compared to controls, respectively. Iron concentration increased first two days in FOO mice and even decreased 7th day after PH compared to controls. Magnesium concentration remains unchanged during the process. Conclusions: Olive oil and corn oil diets induce changes in the mineral composition of liver. Zinc concentration in FSD mice delays to return to original value, compared to other groups. Calcium concentration was increased only in FSD and FOO mice, which suggests that corn oil, rich in linoleic acid, prevents calcium accumulation in regenerating liver.
