Recent Application of the Isotopic Perturbation Method for Determining the Details of Carbocationic Structures

The development of methods for preparing stable solutions of carbocations, together with development of NMR spectroscopy, have increased our knowledge of these ions a great deal. However , even these experimental technique have not been sufficient to clarify structural uncertainties in what became a controversial area, the question of whether an intermediate exists as several classical species in equilibrium, or as a single nonclassical ion. The isotopic perturbation method has proved to be a very important tool in addressing classical-nonclassical ion problem.
