Cytokinin metabolism in fruits of the Christmas Rose (Helleborus niger L.)
Endogenous cytokinins were investigated in unpollinated ovaries and in two stages of developing Christmas rose fruit (very young and ripe fruit), using immunoaffinity chromatography and HPLC separation. Unpollinated ovaries contained 60% ribosides, 22% free bases and 18% 9-glucosides. After fertilization, the amount of total cytokinins increased significantly, in particular that of the ribosides which reached 80% of the total cytokinins. In very young fruit, the main cytokinin was zeatin riboside which was increased about 50 times. In comparison to unpollinated ovaries, a slight increase of total cytokinins was also observed in ripe fruit, but the ratio between ribosides and free bases was changed. Ripe fruit contained equal amounts of zeatin riboside and zeatin.
