The role of soil in landmine detection
Soil, due to its physical and chemical properties, including the moisture content, produces a background or noise in the spectroscopic measurements done for landmine detection and/or identification. During the years 2001-2, a soil characterization campaign in mine-affected locations in Croatia was performed in order to understand the variations of parameters describing soil properties in different locations under variable weather conditions. Some aspects of this research have been already published [3, 1]. Here are presented the results of in situ soil moisture measurements and soil moisture small-scale variability in some details. Future investigation of soil properties relevant to landmine confirmation is also discussed.
