Ad hoc comparison of two atmospheric model predictions : a case of February 2003 bora
The ALADIN/HR (Croatian domain) model has been recently selected to provide the atmospheric forcing for an oceanographic circulation model set up for the Adriatic Sea. To that end test runs with the 10m ALADIN winds have been initiated. In order to assess the validity of the forcing wind fields we have compared the ALADIN data to the analogous output from another atmospheric model (Local Area Model Italy : LAMI), as well as to available field data. The data used for comparison were taken at five meteorological stations along the Northern Adriatic coast: Rijeka, Senj, Rab, Mali Losinj and Zadar. The model predictions of the wind speed and direction were compared to the respective measurements at those stations. Sequence of hourly comparisons of ALADIN/HR (8km and 2km resolution) and LAMI (7km resolution) horizontal wind fields with measurements was also studied. ALADIN and LAMI models are built on similar physics and implemented on similar spatial grids. In spite of many possible cases of disagreement the models produced rather similar results in particular close to Senj and Zadar stations both models are in a very good agreement with measurements. In Rab, Mali Losinj and especially in Rijeka large discrepancies in both wind speed and especially in wind direction have been observed.
