Materials characterization using nuclear microprobe
Interactions between the high energy (MeV) ions and a matter form the basis of a number of different sample characterization techniques. These tecniques provide information about concentration of elements or isotopes on the sample and are also sensitive to surface morphology, sample thickness or crystal structure. Used simultaneously with a focused beam they create a very powerful microanalytical technique-nuclear microscopy. It allows imaging of elemental distributions across the whole periodic table with micron resolution and with high sensitivity. This paper outlines the basic principles of nuclear microscopy and gives the description and recent applications of the Zagreb facility.
