The invisible female dancer
When we explore and study dancing as a phenomenon, we look into and want to learn about a wider framework than a mere structure of movements. Namely, we study the participants and their particular involvement in dancing, as well as the social framework of the particular dance event. In this study I aim at providing answers to the following questions: what are the factors that influence our research, what are the ways in which we choose the subject of our interpretation and all the factors that are involved in making that choice. I also analyse the issue of marginal events, namely why and how some of the vital elements of a custom become and remain marginal. Based on the collection of manuscripts and published texts on Lastovo carnival, I intend to show how a visible female dancers becomes invisible.
