Radiation exposure of children during radiodiagnostic examination of chest
Chest radiography accounts for the most frequent radiological examination of children. To date very few data have been published on the contribution of this kind of exams to the annual radiation doses of pediatric patients. In our former work the dose distribution on the body surface of children was determined during chest radiography as function of the age of patients, and of irradiation conditions. In this work the organ doses in a tissue equivalent antropomorphous children phantom corresponding to the age of 1 to 3 years were measured during chest radiography. Thermoluminescence dosimetry method was used for absorbed dose determination. TLD-700 detectors were evaluated with a computer controlled TLD reader. The effective dose obtained by children of selected age was determined. The significant differences between the reproducibility of dose determination on phantom and on patient are compared. The obtained results are analyzed from the standpoint of optimization and reduction of patient doses.
