PCB-contamination in “ terra rossa” soil samples of an electro-transformer station in Zadar as consequence of oil spills during war action (Croatia)
During the recent war, the karst area of Croatia has been jeopardized by hazardous waste and unscrupulous destruction of natural resources, infrastructure, homes and enterprises. Because of its exceptional ecological sensitivity, this area deserves particular attention. There is con-crete evidence that significant quantities of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), various flame-retardants, explosives, and their by-products were released in the environment during warfare. During 1996, waste oil and soil samples near damaged transformer stations were collected in Delnice, Zadar, Šibenik, Split, and Dubrovnik area and analyzed for PCBs. Results do not in-dicate significant contamination of soils with PCBs at the transformer station (TS) or in oil taken from the oil trench TS "Delnice" and TS “ Split” . However, soils below the capacitor batteries at the transformer stations in Komolac near Dubrovnik and TS 220/110/30 kV "Bilice" in Šibenik, which were hit by rocket fire, showed significant levels of PCBs. Furthermore, results of the analyses of PCBs in soils from four locations in Zadar, Croatia, indicate significant contamination of the investigated area TS 110/35 kV Zadar. This was the reason for a thorough investigation of this site for levels of PCBs in soil samples around the damaged capacitor.
