A study of collisions between laser-produced plasmas generated in a capillary and on a solid target behind a capillary
A second solid target was placed behind a capillary bored into the first target. A ruby laser beam was focused into the entrance of the capillary. Two plasmas that collide behind the back surface of the first target are produced in this target geometry. The first plasma is produced by ablation of the capillary wall and is relatively cold and rarefied. The second plasma is produced by direct ablation of the second target by the part of the laser beam that passed through the capillary. The collision of the two plasma clouds is head-on which maximizes the interpenetration of the two plasma clouds. The plasmas were studied by the XUV time resolved photography and spectroscopy. The plasma parameters of both clouds outside the collision zone, and those of the collision zone itself will be presented and discussed.
