The character of cerebrospinal fluid production
The aim of the study was to determine whether changes in intracranial pressure affect the cerebrospinal fluid formation measured by the ventriculocisternal perfusion technique in the whole of the cerebrospinal fluid system. Domestic cats of both sexes were used and the rate of cerebrospinal fluid formation was calculated by means of the equation of Heisey et al. It was shown that an increase in intracranial pressure significantly decreased the rate of cerebrospinal fluid formation. Since the secretion of cerebrospinal fluid should be independent from intracranial pressure according to the classical hypothesis, the obtained findings indicate that the character of the formation is a passive rather than an active process.
