“Transitional hopes, accession frustration and regional visions: public discourses on gender in Croatia”
The thesis of this paper is that the prolonged ambivalence, non-consistency and backlash tendencies in contemporary gender discourses in Croatia are the result of living in the liminal zone of neglected and outsourced European periphery more than a result of the Balkan specific patriarchal heritage. Therefore, the recent phenomena of women’s disempowerment, domestic violence, and the spreading of mysoginy could be related to regional historical and cultural heritage, but the social reproduction of gender inequity and masculine domination in public, economic and political life are more outspoken offspring of the neoliberal “second transition”.
