What can Narrative Psychiatry Tell us about Emotions? Some Philosophical Reflections on the Case of Psychopathy
Psychopathy is a personality disorder is characterized by specific emotional traits and antisocial lifestyle (Hare 2003 ; Fowler and Lilienfeld 2013). A classical and widespread view on the practical moral and legal significance of this condition is that psychopaths lack moral understanding due to certain emotional impairments that afflict their empathic or other response (Aaltola 2014 ; Morse 2008 ; Nichols 2004 ; Prinz 2006 ). However, neuropsychological research working with paradigms with controlled conditions with respect to this practical issue is still indecisive (Adshead 2014 ; Maibom 2014 ; Jurjako and Malatesti 2016 ; 2018). A narrative approach to the “emotional landscape” of psychopaths is an important route to establish wether and how these subjects have deficits that are relevant for our legal and moral practices.
