Multi-Attribute Concept Design Model of Search and Rescue Vessels
A concept design model of search and rescue (SAR) vessels is developed in order to estimate design parameters within the multi-attribute design procedure of finding the Pareto-optimal vessels. The attributes considered are: service speed, motion sickness incidence, allowable service time in prevailing weather, and acquisition costs of the vessel. Formulation of the parametric relations in the design model is based on the database containing 230 vessels and on heuristic estimation methods for powering, sea-keeping, weight, cost estimating, etc. Vertical accelerations in the seaway are estimated by empirical methods and calibrated by experimental data. Adriatic wave statistics is applied for assessment of significant wave heights, wave periods and their occurrence frequency. ISO criteria for the allowable exposure to vertical accelerations are utilized to estimate operating time. Vessel acquisition cost is estimated by regression recalculated to the year 2000. Pareto-optimal designs are found by applying the principle of non-dominance to the normalized attributes.
