Design process representation for the development of an ICAD system
A structure of the environment for a design system is proposed. The presented approach tends to establish a flexibile structure which would enable the designer to design, using available tools. The system is based on a design plan which represents the design proess. This plan is graphically represented as a hierarchical tree. Each node of the tree represents an action performed by node function. A node has the following attributes: node function, I/O attributes, constraints, and decision parameters. The term "node function" is used of any tool (i.e. method) which may be used to solve a determined task. The system can thus be viewd as an active participant in the process. Mechanical design process is represented as a sequence of transitions from an initial state of data, constraints and goals to the final state, the description of a designed mechanical artefact. The concept of interrupted execution enables skipping between nodes on user's demand, thus changing the plan into a network, at runtime.
