Explaining the Representation of the Design Process
The explanation problem in the CBD system based on a structure of an environment for the design system is analysed. The presented approach tends to establish a flexible structure which would enable the designer to design, using available tools. The system is based on a design-plan which represents a design process. This plan is graphically represented as a hierarchical tree. Each node of the tree represents an action performed by a node function. A node has the following attributes: node function, I/O attributes, constraints, and decision parameters. The term node function is used for any tool (i.e. method) which may be used to solve a determined task. The system can thus be viewed as an active participant in the process. The mechanical design process is represented as a sequence of transitions from an initial state of data, constraints and goals to a final state, the description of the designed mechanical artefact. The idea of interrupted execution enables skipping between nodes according to the users demands, thus changing the plan into a network, at a runtime. Explanation of the particular situation in design process is of vital importance for the designer in such environment.
