Heavy metals, one of the most toxic pollutants, often occur in industrial effluents at very high concentrations, thus posing a serious threat to biota and the environmental. Therefore, different methods have been used to remove heavy metals from aqueous solution such as chemical precipitation, membrane processes, ion exchange resins, activated carbon adsorption, filtration, etc. These processes can be very expensive, and for some metals, may not be efficient. As a result, research into alternative, low-cost materials for removing metals from water is ongoing. The aim of this study is to develop new and low-cost electric furnace slag (EFS) for the removal of heavy-metal pollutants from large volumes of wastewater and other aqueous systems. In this paper, sorption of Pb2+ and Cu2+ ions in the single component has been studied using EFS, a by-product from &laquo ; ; Felis&raquo ; ; foundry in Sisak, Croatia, and batch techniques. The influence of the initial concentration of Pb2+ and Cu2+ and the temperature at which the sorption takes place has has been studied. The order of affinity based on a weight uptake by EFS as follows: Cu2+ > Pb2+. Langmuir model was applied to the experimental data. The Langmuir model is widely used since it is simple and has the ability to describe experimental results in a wide range of concentrations. Langmuir isotherm model can be easily transformed into linear forms to obtain adjustable parameters just by graphical means or by linear regression analysis. The aim of this work is to make a comparison of determination of parametrs in Langmuir isotherm by using linear regression analysis and genetic algorithm. Each method of determination of parameters in Langmuir isotherm was evaluated by calculatiing mean value of RSS. Langmuir isotherm parameters obtaing by genetic algorithm showed better fiting with experimental results.
