Liposomal gels for vaginal drug delivery

Chapter describes development of a liposomal vaginal drug carrier system for vaginal delivery capable to provide sustained and controlled release of entrapped drug. Liposomes containing hydrophilic model substances were prepared by methods that yield high trapping efficiency and tested for in vitro stability in different media that mimic human vaginal conditions (buffer, pH 4.5 ; vaginal fluid simulant with or without mucin). Incorporation of liposomes in Carbopol gels further improved their stabilty. Characterisation of liposomal gel, based on investigation of their flow behaviour and determination of physical stability during storage at stress conditions, confirmed appropriate viscosity and physical stability of liposomes in gels. All performed experiments in this study have proven applicability of liposomes incorporated in gel as a novel vaginal delivery system for localised and sustained release of entrapped substances.
