Modeling for a more efficient solar hydrogen energy system

Hydrogen is a simple, clean and inexhaustible source of energy-the potential fuel of the future. It may be obtained from water electrolysis driven by the power of solar energy using a photovoltaic module. In this study, hydrogen evolution takes place on a nickel electrode in an alkali hydrogen generator (single electrolysis cell) with separate cathodic and anodic compartments. The necessary power is obtained from a photovoltaic module. The investigated model system was designed and constructed from several subunits: a PV module, an electrolyzer and a hydrogen container. Basic system parameters have been measured and analyzed. Electrocatalytic measurements have been performed using cyclic voltammetry, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and linear quasi-potentiostatic polarization. The kinetic parameters have been calculated for cathodic and anodic processes. A simulation of a solar hydrogen energy system has been developed to determine and optimize its operating performance and applicability. The experimental data pointed to a need for coordinating the PV module with the electrolyzer during optimization of the solar hydrogen energy system (when designing an optimum solar hydrogen energy system).
