RNA methylation and antibiotic resistance: an overview
Human efforts to efficiently treat the infectious diseases have been seriously threatened by the emergence and spreading of multiply resistant bacterial pathogens. Being one of the top priorities of public health, the restoration of antibiotic arsenal requires a thorough understanding of molecular mechanisms of antibiotic action and resistance. Here we discuss the molecular mechanisms of antibiotic resistance, putting them in perspective with the common processes of RNA modifications. We review the recent data on the bacterial resistance to macrolide-lincosamide-streptogramin B and aminoglycoside antibiotics based on the action of ribosomal RNA methyltransferases from Erm (Erythromycin resistance methylase) and Agr (Aminoglycoside resistance) family. In light of present information, we revisit the existing and propose new directions to combat resistance and to overcome this burning medical problem.
