Fracture of a Stiffened Panel with Multiple Site Cracks under Lateral Pressure
Considering the catastrophic failure of aged ship structures, damages caused by corrosion and fatigue are found to be the main reason. In a ship structure a crack may initiate at a stress-concetrated region, where it extends by fatigue mechanism under moderate loading conditions. It may grow to a critical size, which leads to an instantenous failure of the structure under an extreme loading condition. Sometimes cracks develop at several adjacent structural members creating multiple site damage (MSD), which may considerably decrease the structural integrity of ship structures. In the present paper, investigations are made for the fracture mechanisms of a stiffened panel, which is damaged by a single crack or multiple site cracks subjected to lateral presure, by fracture experiments and the corresponding numerical simulation.
