Some experiences with chemical procedures for prevention of pitting corrosion on stainless steel equipment on ships
Steinless steel (SS) on ships is often subject to pitting and to other types of localised corrosion causing sometimes very serious damages. Such phenomena are particularly frequent on welded tanks and piping of chemical carriers. The possibility of prevention on pitting susceptibility by acid cleabing of SS surfaces has been investigated and that by treatment with HNO3/HF/H2= mixtures. After such treatment pitting resistance has been determined by measurements of pits depths and densities in particular zones of welded SS 316 L specimens. The influence og chemical treatment on onal pits densities (e.g. on weld itself, on heat affected zones, and on base metal) is especially expressed.
