Erosion corrosion behaviour of boride layers on steel in chloride solutions

Carbon steels and low-alloyy steels are insufficiently resistant to erosion corrosion in suspensions of hard particles in chloride solutions which are often encountered in practice (like natural seawater, formation water in oil and gas wells etc.). One possible way of increasing the resistance is the formation of diffusion layers on steel surfaces by carburising, nitriding, boronising etc. In this paper the effect of boronising on the resistance of a carbon steel and of a low-alloy CrMo-steel to erosion corrosion in suspensions of silica in NaCl-solution has been investigated.
