An Unknown Pioneer: V. Krišković in the Reception of British Literature in Croatia 1919-1940
The aim of this paper is to eludicate the role of Vinko Krišković (1861-1952), an important but up to now neglected mediator of British literature in criticism, translation and cross-cultural awareness in Croatia between two world wars. The retired university professor of state law published prefaces and translations of notable authors in the context where British literature was inadequately known to general public. Although his literary criticism was mainly positivistic it was important because it was pioneering. His work on translating Shakespeare was judged favourably in Britain: Krišković was elected a member of Royal Shakespearean Society.
