Polyphenols, Phytosterols and Bitter Principles in Teucrium L. Species Growing in Croatia: Qualitative, Quantitative and Multivariate Analysis

Chromatographic, spectrophotometric and spectrodensitometric methods were used for qualitative and quantitative analysis of total polyphenols, tannins, phytosterols and bitter principles in native and cultivated populations of Teucrium L. species growing in Croatia (T. arduini L., T. chamaedrys L., T. flavum L., T. montanum L., T. polium L., and T. scordium L. subsp. scordioides SCHREB.). Contents of total polyphenols and tannins significantly varied among examined Teucrium species and were somewhat higher in native samples (total polyphenols: 6.80-13.68% ; tannins: 1.20-3.48%) than in cultivated samples (total polyphenols: 6.40-7.80% ; tannins: 1.00-1.60%). The highest amount of these compounds was determined in native samples of T. montanum. ß-sitosterol (0.056-0.129%) was determined using spectrodensitometry and the content was not significantly different between native and cultivated samples of the same plant species. Bitterness values (ml of water in which one gram of the crude drug still has a detectable bitter taste) were similar for native and cultivated samples of the same species. The smallest bitterness value was established for T. flavum (5200), while the highest one was determined for T. montanum (15600). The results were evaluated using multivariate analysis as a contribution to elucidation of chemotaxonomic relations between different taxa of genus Teucrium L.
