Descriptors for the objective evaluation of sailcloth weather resistance
In the sailing world, especially in the conventional one, sailcloth resistance to degradation during weathering is usually expressed in terms of strength loss (breaking, tearing, or bursting) and colorfastness, although these parameters are not sufficient for a qualitative and quantitative description of sail damage caused by aging, as well as for the prediction of possible implications on sail maritime properties. In order to investigate the possibilities for the objective measurement and evaluation of sailcloth weather resistance and to find out what are the finest differences responsible for winning between the top ten racing sails, we have preformed numerous tests (breaking, tearing, micro- & macro-construction) on a sailcloth exposed to natural environment i.e. the atmosphere impact (temperature, rain, sun, wind) for three months.
