Investigating Possibilities Of Conserving A Textile Shroud From The Second Millemiun B.C.
There is an enormous variety of textiles in the collections of museums and private collectors, ranging, for example, from the unpatterned table linen to multimedia, three-dimensional, lavishly decorated bed hangings of complex composition. In order to find a place in a museum an object need not be remarkably old. The use of man-made fibres and advances in textile manufacture brought about by modern technology are widely reflected in museum collections. Nevertheless, natural fibres and traditional techniques still predominate ; and because these materials deteriorate more rapidly than man-made fibres when exposed to light, atmospheric pollution, and destructive organisms, or when subjected to unsuitable modes of storage and display, it is with natural fibres that conservators are more often concerned, especially if the textiles are archeological findings and descriptors of human history. This paper deals with such a textile object. Possible ways of conserving a textile shroud, more then 3 thousand years old, and some preliminary steps are presented.
