Dynamic crack initiation and growth in light-core sandwich composite materials
Composite structures such as fiber-reinforced plastic laminates and sandwich panels made with laminate skins and lightweight cores (e.g. PVC foam) offers weight savings and their corrosion resistance gives advantage over traditional metallic materials. Such components, however, could be subjected to high-speed impacts by fragments, resulting from the effects of disintegrating machinery, as well as to low velocity impact by accidentally dropped objects or unexpected service loads. The goal of this work was to perform basic experiments in order to investigate possible dynamic failure mechanisms (crack propagation). Two optical experimental methods were initially considered as candidate diagnostics - caustics and CGS. High-speed photography is used for the first time to investigate dynamic failure processes in a PVC foam core/glass fiber composite skin, sandwich structure in order to improve the impact and penetration resistance of such structures
