On determination JIc parameter using a CN plate specimen
A procedure for determination of the critical J-integral parameter value, JIc, associated with the onset of stable crack propagation under Mode I deformation is presented in this paper. Fracture tests were carried out for centrally notched tension plate specimen - CN. The experiments have shown that the large scale yielding occurred in the specimen ligaments and some stable fracture proceeded to the plastic collapse. The elastic-plastic fracture mechanics concept was employed in fracture analysis. Finite element simulations, including both large deformation and elastic-plastic material behaviour were performed. J-integral and crack tip opening displacement, δt, values, were calculated using post-processing procedures. Combining numerical results of the δt values, with the corresponding experimentally obtained value associated with the crack propagation onset, the JIc value was estimated.
