Propagation of Multiple Fatigue Cracks in Stiffened Panels
A simulation procedure for propagation of multiple collinear fatigue cracks was introduced. The crack propagation simulation procedure is based on numerical integration of the Paris equation, taking account of the interaction of several cracks, where Mode I stress intensity factors are calculated by a general purpose FEM program. The procedure was verified comparing simulation results with experimental fatigue tests on stiffened and un-stiffened specimens damaged either with a single crack or a multiple array of cracks. One could apply the procedure to other thin-walled structures such as ship or aircraft structures, providing the fracture mechanics parameters for the material are known and stress intensity factors can be calculated.
