Application of DNA analysis in forensic veterinary medicine
In the last two decades the development and application of different DNA analysis has revolutionised forensic science. Although the vast majority of DNA analysis is performed for the investigations of human DNA, mainly for legal cases, paternity disputes and identification of human remains, there is an increasing interest in analyses of animal DNA. Applications can be various, such as: crime investigation with animals as witnesses or offenders, pedigree analysis or proof of paternity, wildlife protection and conservation of endangered animal species, cases related to animal welfare, detecting animal tissues in feedstuffs, etc. Currently, the prevailing forensic technique that provides definitive information about animal identification is analysis of DNA using polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Some PCR approaches are species-specific short tandem repeat (STR) analysis, random amplified polymorphic DNAs fingerprints (RAPD-PCR) and quantitative intra-short interspersed element PCR. Others are focused on sequencing of specific mitochondrial regions such as the hypervariable displacement Loop (D-loop) region and the cytochrome-b gene (cyt-b). In veterinary, as well as in human forensics, the strength of the DNA evidence needs to be assessed using a reliable method. The results must correctly reflect the sample being tested, and the method used must be reproducible. Accuracy, reproducibility and a rigorous statistical approach are essential for submission of obtained results to a court of law.
