Virtual reality in personalized mental health medicine

New research directions in personalized mental health virtual reality (VR) therapy are proposed, particularly in the areas of prevention and treatment of stress-related disorders. Concepts and tools regarding personalized audio-visual stimuli generation, multimodal emotional state estimation, and closed-loop stimuli delivery based on the patient’s multimodal response are presented. Audio-visual stimuli consist of static pictures, sounds, real-life video clips and synthetic VR scenes, while multimodal responses of the patient are represented in the form of an augmented mental state vector, which includes affective, cognitive, physiological, motor/behavioral and neural subvectors. Personalization of patient’s stimuli is based on initial information gathering, as well as on continuous acquiring of the patient’s multimodal responses during the sequence of therapeutic sessions. This personalization can be additionally extended by collaboration between the therapist and the expert system. Personalized estimation of the patient’s emotional state is based on appropriate artificial neural network algorithms, which integrate various features of the patient’s multimodal response, like autonomic physiology, voice, and facial expressions. The proposed approach is in line with personalized psychiatry, with potential to significantly improve psychological and biological state of the patient in the larger framework of Psychiatry for the Person.
