Loadind and Discharging of Bulk Carriers
The ships known as bulk-carriers are accepted as simple construction of robust type for severe exploitation conditions. The ship size has grown in due time and today the bulk-carrier fleet is in sizes from 20,000 DWT to 150,000 DWT. The world shipping community requires the clarification of the bulk-carrier losses and casualties occuring during the past years. In spite of the fact that some of the causes of casualties and losses have been partly clarified till now, the present design of new bulk-carriers is based on the same old ship construction design generally unchanged. One of the main reasons for the bulk-carrier damage, especially with heavy ore cargo, is likely to be the lack of constant application of loading/unloading procedure completed with the calculation results. It can be expected that a more detailed recommendation can be given to designers of bulk-carriers for the construction of transverse bulkhead in bow area, especially due to possible damage and flooding of the first hold.
