Comparative in vitro antimicrobial activity of various flavonoids

Many infectious diseases have been known to be treated with herbal remedies throughout the history of mankind. Natural products, either as pure compounds or as standardized plant extracts, provide an almost unlimited potential for search of novel drugs. Flavonoids are a large group of plant secondary metabolites with potentially exploitable antimicrobial activities and this class of natural products is increasingly becoming the subject of anti-infective research. In this work in vitro antimicrobial activity of 17 flavonoid aglycones from different subclasses as well as six medicinal plant extracts containing flavonoids was estimated by microdilution broth assay. Candida albicans ATCC 10231 showed the highest sensitivity to the majority of tested flavonoids (MICs 0.01-1.00 mg/mL) and plant extracts (MICs 0.63-1.25 mg/mL). Among the investigated flavonoids found to be effective against Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 6538, myricetin and isoliquiritigenin were considered to be most potent (MIC 0.25 mg/mL). Chalcone isoliquiritigenin also demonstrated the strongest antibacterial effect against Escherichia coli ATCC 8739 (MIC 0.50 mg/mL). Our results provided additional evidence of antimicrobial activity of various flavonoids and highlighted some promising candidates for future research.
