PART OF THE MANUSCRIPT “GREAT FOLK-MEDICINE BOOK OF SINJ” – TREATMENT OF DIGESTIVE DISEASES

Folk-medicine books (so-called “Ljekaruše”) are manuscript containing collections of folk recipes for preparing remedies and providing instruction on their use. In the past centuries, these collections of recipes were in Croatia mostly written and used by Franciscans, who were the most educated people in this area at the time. They were written with the intention of providing better health care and medical treatment to the widest possible circle of people, especially the poor, who did not have access to official medicine since they were not enlightened and they were living far away from major city centres. Folk-medicine books offer abundant information on folk names of diseases, medicinal plants, technology of making ethnopharmaceutical preparations and represent valuable material for ethnologists, philologists, historians of pharmacy and medicine. They are also a valuable source of information on treatment with medicinal plants which are today neglected or unknown in contemporary phytopharmacy, although they have medicinal properties and could become significant in treatment with natural remedies. We are here for the first time disclosing a part of the manuscript “Velika sinjska ljekaruša” (i.e. “Great Folk-Medicine Book of Sinj”) which refers to treatment of digestive diseases, as well as a transcript from the archaic Croatian script “poljička bosančica” to the Latin script. It contains over 1700 recipes, which mostly include descriptions of herbal medicinal preparations, but also of animal and mineral preparations. Some of the herbal material is in use even today and has a prominent place on the pharmaceutical science.
