Facing the New Science Policy - Time to Meet Global Challenges

The steady growth of scientific capacity, the expansion of the Internet, and the hyper-mobility of knowledge has enabled new knowledge producers in global science and technology communities. In times ahead, the security and competitiveness in science will require a sharing, rather than protecting knowledge and information. This moves to new horizons in all sciences. The innovation is one of flagship initiatives of the Europe 2020 strategy for a smart, sustainable and inclusive economy, included in its Horizon 2020, the EU Framework Programme for Research and Innovation. This programme is structured in three main pillars: excellent science, industrial leadership and societal challenges. All these challenges are facing with the challenges in global economy and the most vital economies in 21st century will be those that are immersed in knowledge networks, since our progress is dependent on science, technology and communication. Pharmaceutical sciences are facing with the same challenges and are affected by global economy movements and the increase of medicines market. Still the main challenge is to develop new medicines that can prevent or cure currently incurable diseases and also an access and affordability of medicines to those who consume and pay for healthcare around the world. Nowadays the task of discovering and developing of safe and effective medicines is even more promising as our knowledge increases thanks to recent advances in genomics, proteomics and computational technologies as powerful tools in understanding the process of disease. New therapies for a range of diseases, affecting both, developed and developing world populations, are currently, or will soon become available in transforming patient care.
