Level of oxidative stress in mountain marathon participants
The aim of this study was to follow the level of oxidative stress in mountain marathon participants. Urine samples (n=21) were collected before mountain marathon (52 km, in average 8.5 h), immediately after the race, and 16 and 24 h after the race. In urine samples the level of oxidative stress was determined as the level of malondialdehyde (MDA) by thiobarbituric acid assay. Comparing to the level of MDA in urine before the race (2.82±1.35 μM), the level of MDA in urine was significantly higher immediately after the race (6.99±4.18 μM ; t-test, p<0.05) and 16 h after the race (4.49±1.50 μM ; t-test, p<0.05). 24 h after the race the MDA level in urine returned to the values before the race (3.75±1.61 μM). This data indicate that in this group of mountain marathon participants the increase of oxidative stress is only temporary with no persistent oxidative stress.
